The Garden
by Maheen Sohail, March 27, 2020
In a hustle and bustle of restaurants, latest trends and new foods emerging, we can often get lost. So let’s trace our steps back and go back to The Garden.
As chefs it is very important for us to know where our ingredients come from, how we can cherish them and learn to grow our own. Amidst the tension of the pandemic that we are currently dealing with, I have decided to utilise my time. I have been reading up about various ingredients I can grow on my own and how I can use them to create different dishes. During my visit to the MCA museum, I came across an interesting way to grow our produce. It is called a modern sprout hydro grow kit. Simply put, hydroponic gardening is a method of growing plants without soil. It’s a way to nurture a huge variety of edible plants (think herbs, veggies, even some fruits) indoors all year round, regardless of what Mother Nature is doing outside your door. This is a great way for those of us who live in apartments and have limited access to the garden and natural sunlight. I recently purchased indoor led sunlight which has let my plants grow very well.
Moreover, I plan to volunteer my time at farms this year to learn more about growing my own produce and sustaining the ingredients.
