Julia May Summer 2019 Blog

This quarter has been a very exciting one for me. I have been balancing working at my internship and taking online classes but, I feel as though I have learned a ton about the industry. My internship that took place during both the Spring and Summer quarters was with Lettuce Entertain You and I have nothing but positive things to say about my experience. I was working at Wildfire in Oakbrook and got to host, work carryout, and serve. Being trained in a variety of positions helped grow my knowledge of the restaurant as well as keep my job super interesting since each day was a new experience. In addition to the hourly positions, we also had meetings once a week with all the interns where we would get to hear from different partners within the company and hear their stories and how they got to be where they are now in the hospitality industry.

My favorite speaker was from the Parties and Special Events division which is where I am most interested in working. I am currently studying Hospitality Management with an emphasis on Event Planning so I really enjoyed learning about that side of the business through my internship. Similar to the capstone project at Kendall, during the internship we were assigned groups and were assigned to come up with a restaurant concept to then present to the partners at Lettuce Entertain You. I’m not going to lie, it was very intimidating to be presenting in front of people I hope to be future employers but, it was also a ton of fun to see all our ideas come together and very rewarding!

My group came up with GreenWich- a sustainable and environmentally friendly fast casual dining experience.

Doing online classes for both the Spring and Summer quarters while I was doing my internship was challenging but, I am very excited to be starting up classes in the Fall and to be back on campus! Hope everyone enjoys their last few weeks of summer!
