Essay Guidelines
The premier scholarship essay requires a minimum word count of 1,000. This essay will also be applicable to all other scholarships where you satisfy the criteria. If you are not applying for the premier scholarship, a 500-word count minimum is required.
The Scholarship Selection Committee is interested in more than just your GPA. You are unique, so think of your essay as an excellent and critical opportunity to give members of the selection committee a sense of who you are beyond your GPA and resume.
In the essay, it is important to convey how your leadership, goals, and strengths meet the scholarship’s statement of purpose and qualifications. This includes:
Who are you? What makes you stand out? Do you work part-time (or full-time) in addition to your studies? Are you your family’s main financial contributor? Are you involved in your college or industry activities?
Candidates’ essays should include aspects of their personality, goals, and achievements and how those relate to the scholarship for which they are applying. Emphasize why this scholarship is critical to your success and how it will help you further your personal, academic, and professional goals at your college and beyond.
Choose one of the following essay questions to answer:
- If we were to be sitting with you three years from now, what would have had to have happened to you both personally and or professionally for you to feel that you have benefited from this scholarship?
- Working with others usually involves some give and take. Describe a time when you worked out an agreement with a peer or team member. What did you do? What was the result?
- “The way to do is to be” Please describe what this means to you.
- Please discuss your “dream” job in the hospitality industry – think big!
- If you had unlimited financial resources and exceptional backing, how would you use your culinary or business skills to make a difference?
- If you were the chef or owner of a major restaurant, what would you name the restaurant? Where would it be located? What would be your signature appetizer, entrée, and dessert?
- If your personal vision is to serve the hospitality industry in another capacity, what would be your dream job or organization where you could use your talents and skills to the maximum benefit of individuals served by your ideal establishment?
- If awarded a scholarship, how do you envision this impacting your life and studies?
- What do you think is more important – exceeding a guest’s expectation of service, or achieving the financial goals of your business?
- Discuss how your interest in your field or major developed and describe your experience in the field – such as volunteer work or internships – and what you gained from this involvement.
- What experience or individual (mentor, instructor, class, etc.) has influenced you to pursue a career in the culinary or hospitality industry? Please include in your essay a discussion of your career goals.
Essays may be submitted separately via email to scholarships@kendallcollegetrust.org and should be single-spaced, except when spaces separate paragraphs.
